This coffee is grown on Mount Elgon, an extinct volcano on the Kenya/ Uganda border. Its crater is about five miles in diameter and it has several peaks of which Wagagai is the highest, standing at 4,321 metres above sea level.
Smallholder farmers living on the slopes of Mt. Elgon- Eastern Uganda are blessed with rich, fertile solid, beautiful surroundings, and excellent conditions to cultivate high quality coffee and rich agro-forestry goods, in harmony with their environment. Despite this, a stable livelihood is not straight forward. Our communities are very remote, making it hard to reach the wider world with our coffees.
Climate change is affecting our livelihoods. Rains come less reliably, and torrential downpours have caused fatal landslides affecting our farmers in the last few years. Sadly the Gumutindo cooperative representing these farmers became unviable, leaving these farmers without a route to market, or an organization to represent them.
Mt Elgon Agroforestry Communities Cooperative Enterprise Ltd was recently formed to enable our primary society cooperatives to supply our fantastic coffees and other fruits for the forest to local and global customers.
This coffee is Fairtrade Certified.
Flavours and characteristics A fruity coffee with a smooth, round body and hints of chocolate.
